<p>The unit was formed as the 514th Troop Carrier Wing at Birmingham MAP, AL in June 1949 with the C-46 and a mixture of trainer types. The 514th moved to Mitchel AFB, NY in October 1949 and was mobilized in May 1951. The wing converted to C-119s in 1952 and was inactivated briefly between February and April 1953, when it returned to Reserve control and reformed at Mitchel AFB. The 514th relocated to McGuire AFB in March 1961 and re-equipped with C-124Cs in 1966. The unit was redesignated the 514th TAW in July 1967 before becoming the 514th MAW (Associate) in September 1968 as the first Associate unit. The wing initially provided Reservist personnel for active-duty C-9As, C-141As and C-5As at MAC bases within the 21st Air Force region, although the assignment of additional Associate units at Dover, Charleston and Scott AFB enabled the 514th to concentrate on StarLifter operations at McGuire. The unit was redesignated the 514th Air Mobility Wing with the transfer of KC-10A squadrons to McGuire, enabling AFRes crews to replace active-duty personnel.
